MICROSURGERY

Microsurgery is a general term for surgery requiring an operating microscope. It is a skilled and technique-sensitive procedure as it requires highly focused mind and precision to perform the procedure. This is how a dental microscope looks like.

Apicoectomy/Root End Surgery

Apicoectomy, also known as root end surgery, is a microsurgical procedure to save a tooth where root canal treatment has failed. Root canal treatment has a small chance to fail because it is challenging to predictably seal all the ramifications and portal of exits (labelled number 2,11,12,13 in picture below) which is not visible to our naked eyes.

Other than that, for those who have been delaying seeking treatment, bacteria will have enough time to form a layer of plaque at the outer surface of the root (labelled number 1 in the picture above), which is impossible to be cleaned and removed with root canal treatment alone. Following is an animated video explaining about apicoectomy.

There is now a paradigm shift in the field of dental surgery after the cutting-edge laser technology is being made available, where blades and burs will no longer be used for cutting and drilling. We use laser to perform the whole procedure. The advantages of using laser to perform surgery are:
1) minimally invasive
2) minimal bleeding
3) minimal post operative complications such as no bleeding, less swelling, and less pain
4) very fast healing and recovery.
